2nd Grade

Introduction to Drawing Books

Introduce the concept of following step by step
Copy ONE page out of the drawing books and draw together in class.  It is ok if you don't draw perfect!  Show them they shouldn't be afraid!
Have other copied pages for students to try at their desk.  You will want to copy some pages because we don't have THAT many books.

2nd Grade Research Report

Day 2
Divide the class into 2 segments so one side can pick 1 day to draw.  The other side can pick one day to research.

Students should pick a dinosaur to research (you can have them pick dinosaurs names out of a hat if you want).

The dinosaur report gives some ideas that kids might want to write down about their dinosaur.

Read-Aloud
Model reading one dinosaur book to write notes about your dinosaur.

Students then draw and research.

Day 3

Students flip flop.  Complete another readaloud of a dinosaur book and writing down notes about the dinosaur.

Dewey System 4th-5th

Introduction:Day 1

Introduction -- 000's

Computer Books and Unexplained Phenomenon

Introduce New books in library including The Cryptid Files (Fiction section), Cryptozoology, etc.

Introduce the concept of some books being in Nonfiction even though they are clearly not "true" books.

If you have extra time either read about one of the unexplained creatures in the cryptozoology book OR the first 2 pages of the Cryptid Files #1.

Day 2--300's

Day 3-400's!

The Great Dewey Coin Caper

Picture
This website shows the 300's and some interesting categories

The video is all about the 300s, but it is very quiet.

Activity-Fortune Teller

Lesson Plan

Introduction:  Review Dewey Categories (ie why are we walking through Dewey?)
Answer: So we can be introduced to new books and sections we might enjoy AND be able to find books quickly!

400's--Review the original Prezi (from above about the other sections of Dewey).

Introduce a few good books from the 400 sections.  What other types of books would kids like to see?  Do they seem interested in language books?  Let me know!

Play The Great Dewey Coin Caper (As a class).

If you need an incentive tell them that we will be doing a library game day for classes that have earned it in a month or so.

Day 4--500's !!

What kind of things are in the 500's?  Check out Dewey Browse!

The 500's cover a lot of material and are often popular.

For the pieces of paper I would substitute the cards from one of the shelf order games.

Before students play remind them that just part of going to the library is learning the Dewey number.  Few people have Dewey memorized.  The biggest skill is using the # from the catalog and then finding where that number would go on the shelf.
