4th / 5th grade at LES and WES![]() Students design a library mug to hand out to administration staff. Mug should celebrate libraries, School Library Month (April) or National Library Week! 4th / 5th grade at RES and EESLetters to the Editor (link to informative page for students) Students talk about why we should support libraries in a letter designed for the editor. Winning entries will be submitted to the Sentinel and McPherson News. Due Date: April 6th, 2016 Suggestions: Include either the dates for School Library Month: April 2016 or National Library Week Encourage people to celebrate by visiting the library or a Little Free Library. Explain why libraries are awesome! HOW DO YOU WRITE A LETTER TO THE EDITOR?OPEN THE LETTER WITH A SIMPLE SALUTATION.Don't worry if you don't know the editor's name. A simple "To the Editor of the Daily Sun," or just “To the Editor:” is sufficient. If you have the editor's name, however, you should use it to increase the possibilities of your letter being read. GRAB THE READER'S ATTENTION.Your opening sentence is very important. It should tell readers what you’re writing about, and make them want to read more. EXPLAIN WHAT THE LETTER IS ABOUT AT THE START.Throughout your letter, remember the rule:
EXPLAIN WHY THE ISSUE IS IMPORTANT.If you are motivated enough to write a letter to a newspaper or magazine, the importance of your topic may seem clear to you. Remember, though, that the general public probably doesn't share your background or the interest. Explain the issue and its importance simply. Use plain language that most people will understand 3/8/2016 0 Comments 1st and 2nd gradeAll around the World in the LibraryBooks (if you don't see these in the catalog they are probably in the to-be-catalogued pile)

Voting Ballot for Beverly ClearyThis is for 3rd grade |
Voting Ballot for William Allen WhiteThis is for 4th and 5th grades |
When you collect the ballots for WAW use the following tally sheet to mark numbers for each grade level. This is how I have to report them, there was some confusion in past years.
Rules for Voting
Students must have read at least two of the books in their list.
Third grade votes on Beverly Cleary
Fourth and Fifth grade vote on William Allen White.
Let them know we will inform them of the winner for the school BUT that their vote is actually counted for WAW with all students across Kansas and Beverly Cleary across the United States.

When students are finished they can start a design for the McPherson Public Library Bookmark contest (please note this is a 2 sided copy!!)
Please collect finished bookmarks and we will send them to the public library as a set.
