Enchanted--fiction or nonfiction? 2nd / 3rd

Picture
Picture
Using the theme have students pick out pieces that are fiction vs nonfiction.

Possible read-alouds: The Library Pages OR the Library Gingerbread Man

Ask students--How do I know where your books are?  If you ask for a unicorn book how do I know how to find it?
What is the difference between fiction and nonfiction (use some book examples to help answer this question).

Students should know
Fiction and Nonfiction are on different sides of the library
The difference between the two.
That the call numbers stand for the sections of the library.
That we have helping signs in the library that tell us where books are.

Watch one of the basic Dewey Videos

Challenge--Basic (ABC) shelver OR write down their names and line up in ABC order.

If you have time for a day 2--Dewey Bingo plus additional video.

Pigeon Books and Book care --could be 2 days depending on your teachers

Picture
Again--Start with library songs

Books--Any Pigeon book

Book Care Page

Also--Don't let the Pigeon Ruin your library book
Even though you technically aren't checking off the shelves--I don't think it would hurt to show students that you love pigeon books so much that you have a special spot in the library for them.

Extension Activity?
Paper Plate Pigeon

No, David (probably 2 days worth, unless your teachers really hit David hard)

I just ordered the newest David book for everyone--Grow Up, David!

4th/5th Septemberish

Dewey Introduction

Dewey Review Day 1

Watch above video -- as you watch use the worksheet 1 (Try your hand at classification) to organize the books into their classifications.  You may want to just give each kid one and call on them as you get to their section).

Play Shelver as a class

Then play shelf finder and have them line up as a group.  Start with Fiction and then do nonfiction.

Dewey Worksheets (please do a worksheet page on the first day)

Dewey Review Day 2
Reminder
Play Shelf Finder Game
Use the shelf finder cards and give each student 1--students should find where their card goes on the library shelf and leave it there (putting the card so you can see it).
Bonus:  Have them put a sticky on it (green for their team, or yellow for their team) so you can check answers and they can earn a team point.

Review and have students sign Acceptable Use Policy

Have students check out Destiny Discover!

Day 3 Dewey Review/Book Review
     Review Destiny Discover
Show students how to place a hold on a book.  Remind them about hold rules (ie the book can't be available in the library right now).
Also--Have students create a book review.

This video isn't bad, but you will want to skip the beginning that is Junior High specific.
