I went ahead and drew a robot on the board and called him Bob. They thought this was pretty funny. So we just told Bob some important things about the library. Then I had them do a quick reminder video about left and right because some of them might not know how to distinguish the two for the robot instructions activity--www.youtube.com/watch?v=e9MLhGmyPko

I decided to just choose a few volunteers and the class would program them one at a time to get to a certain spot in the library rather than use the taped squares. They seemed to like this. We used turn left, turn right, etc. so the video definitely helped with this. I showed a bit of the other robot video (popular mechanics) if we had extra time with this group too.

The happy maps activity was perfect for 1st grade, but too easy for both 2nd and 3rd grade. The book Oh No! was a great intro for algorithms though. Did Move it, Move it with 2nd grade today, they had so much trouble with it that I didn't try it with the 1st graders. Will probably be perfect tomorrow with the 3rd graders.

With Happy maps I used the book boy + bot. I had the students tell Bot what the rules of the library were. Then, I had the class direct a student over to the desk. The key to that was having the student move one square, or one step at a time. The 1st graders did well with this along with 2nd and 3rd. It was a little easier for the 3rd graders and tomorrow I will do the move it lesson with the 3rd graders. With 1st grade we are going to go over this lesson again, because I did not feel they grasped the concept completely.

The littles are enjoying the robot theme, books, and discussing their ideas about robots. The happy maps activity worked well with first grade, but was too easy for 2nd and 3rd. We spent a decent amount of time discussing the rules and expectations of library. I plan on showing them the left/right video next time we meet because there were many of them that struggled knowing the difference between the two.

I start my first Move It, Move It lesson with 3rd grade tomorrow. I will make sure to make adjustments before I do the lesson with 1st and 2nd.
