EPIC day with Heos

Bridget Heos has a TON of books on EPIC, this would be a great time to read one together and then have students pick some read individually on their devices.  My understanding is that all the iPads should have EPIC.

FYI--You will want to make sure they look up Bridget Heos and not just Heos to get her books.
Also-only two of them are read out loud, so you may not need headphones.

Animal Adaptions

Just an extra lesson that goes with the books Animals Just like Us!

Pet Project

This could be in lieu of the animal adaptations or instead of.  This is an easier assignment and this series on EPIC is easier to read.

3rd Grade December Lessons

Practice Battle of the Books

Put students in groups of 3 or 4 (just for the day)
Have them write on a piece of paper everything they can remember about the book (if you have enough copies let them see the book).

Explain how to do the questions, ie they can answer as a group, but they have to answer in one min

First question goes to any team, the next questions go to each team in order (so each team has a chance to answer).  If a team doesn't answer correctly anyone can buzz in (ring in, etc). I don't have buzz in toys for everyone so be creative.

(Google timer for a timer)

I do not have a lot of questions, feel free to add some of your own if you wish.

Beverly Cleary Books (Grade 3)

Day 1
What is a Little Free Library? (Lesson for 2nd-4th)
here is the flipchart that accompanies that lesson
Day 2-3
3rd Grade Lesson Plans for BCCCA

2nd grade will pick this up after Holiday Break, possibly.  These books have a much higher reading level than last year.

Possible Discussion Questions

Beverly Cleary said that when she went to school she didn't have time to read, all she did was answer questions about books and do book reports.  Do you have time to read in your class?  Do you think you should have more quiet time to read?

Beverly Cleary mentioned that she was lucky that she was a child before radio and tv because her mother read aloud to her and her father every night.  Do you agree that she was lucky?

To Read Aloud
10 Interesting Things to Know about Violet Mackerel pdf download

• She was named after a small purple
flower with a very lovely smell.
• In French, which is the language her
mum is learning, Violet’s name is
Violette.
• Her favourite stone is moonstone, and
she has one of her own that she
 sometimes puts under her pillow.
• She has the sort of hair that even if you
comb and comb, it still looks a bit messy.
• As well as being Violet’s surname,
mackerel is also a kind of fish which lays
around a million eggs at one time.

Picture

• Violet would quite like to have a
smallish grey kitten of her own.
• Just in case she ever does get a kitten,
she has a whole page of ideas for names
written in one of her notebooks.
• When she is older Violet would like to
be an archaeologist, but she also thinks it
might be quite interesting to be a potter, a
singer, a farmer, a marine biologist and a
planter of trees.
• At school she especially likes creative
writing, painting, science and news.
• Apart from violets, her favourite flowers
are fuchsias because they look a bit like
tiny dancers with lots of feet.
